Wednesday is returning in 2027. While an official release date for the hit Netflix show has not been revealed yet, series star Jenna Ortega spoke to Esquire about when the new season will premiere and what we can expect in the new episodes.

Season 3 of the dark fantasy is slated to premiere in late 2027. The last time we saw Wednesday Addams, she was a sophomore at Nevermore Academy. In Season 3, though, Ortega confirmed that Wednesday is a high school senior, but whether she ever returns to Nevermore remains to be seen.

Ortega was filming in Ireland at the time of the Esquire interview, far from Wednesday’s original Vermont locale. The new episodes are filming across Ireland and France, where the season will take place. The location change will likely spell major changes for the series.

Wednesday Will Grapple With the Prospect of Adulthood

The Season 3 time jump from sophomore to senior year could mean a more mature Wednesday Addams — one who knows that her teenage years are ending as adulthood is just around the corner. Throughout the series, Wednesday has shown confidence and self-assurance, which Ortega admires.

“Wednesday is very aware of who she is, the world that she lives in, and what she wants out of it,” Ortega said. “Anytime anyone is just undeniably themselves, it’s quite magnetic.”

However, the actress teases some big changes that are coming for her character. She told Esquire, “This season, especially because the kids are seniors in high school now, we’re dealing with more confrontational feelings regarding family and what it means to be an adult and what you see for your life.” She added, “It’s not really until you get to the precipice of adulthood that you start to realize, Oh, God, well maybe I’ve got to have a plan.”

Throughout the series, viewers have watched Wednesday contend with her complicated family relationships, particularly with her mother, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Ortega teases that in Season 3, those storylines will continue to unfold. Only now, Wednesday is on the cusp of adulthood, which may further complicate her mother-daughter relationship.

Season 3 of Wednesday brings a time jump, new relational dynamics, and a location change, but that’s not all there is to look forward to. It was announced in April that three new cast members would be joining the show: Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), James Lance (Ted Lasso), and Andrew McCarthy (St. Elmo’s Fire). In addition, Ortega will reunite with her Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice co-star Winona Ryder, who also joins the cast. And finally, Eva Green (Penny Dreadful) will play Wednesday’s aunt and Morticia’s sister, Ophelia, a character that has been heavily built up throughout the series. CBR called the addition of “Gothic icon” Eva Green “exactly what Wednesday needs.”

Wednesday Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Netflix. Season 3 comes out in late 2027.
