The Addams family is getting a little larger in Wednesday season 3.
Burton’s adaptation of the classic gothic family comedy quickly became Netflix’s new hit sensation, with season 3 confirmed before season 2 even premiered. While plot details remain under wraps, the next set of episodes is expected to pick up from the Wednesday season 2 finale’s multiple cliffhangers, including Grandmama Frump holding the thought-to-be-dead Ophelia captive, Tyler going with Capri to a secret pack of master-less Hydes and Jenna Ortega’s titular character going with Uncle Fester and Thing to find Enid after her werewolf transformation.
After reports of cameras rolling, Netflix has officially announced that Wednesday season 3 is now in production with a video announcing new and returning cast members. Included in the video are the announcements of Winona Ryder reuniting with Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega after Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as a character named Tabitha, and Chris Sarandon reuniting with Burton for the first time since The Nightmare Before Christmas as a character named Balthazar. Check out the video announcement below:
The Wednesday season 3 cast announcement confirms that all of the original stars will be returning to their respective roles, while also confirming multiple actors to be getting upgraded roles, namely Joanna Lumley as Grandmama Frump. Interestingly, it also reveals that as one Noah B. Taylor is exiting, Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory star Noah Taylor is joining as a mystery character named Cyrus.
Sarandon’s casting in Wednesday season 3 is sure to come as a welcome decision in marking the first time he and Burton have worked together since The Nightmare Before Christmas. His role of Balthazar is one still clouded in mystery, though the 1991 Addams Family movie, which Burton originally was set to direct, made mention of such a character being a cousin to the family, with Gomez and Morticia having met at his funeral. With season 2 of the Netflix series expanding on Morticia and Gomez’s past, this could be kept canonical with flashbacks showing this history.
It’s also interesting to note that the bottle of wine situated next to Balthazar’s in the video has a question mark on it, potentially hinting at a currently-uncast character tied to Balthazar. Given the numerous reunions Burton has going in Wednesday season 3, with Eva Green having been cast as Ophelia in November, it seems possible he was eyeing a full Nightmare Before Christmas reunion with Catherine O’Hara alongside Sarandon. With the Emmy winner having passed away just a month before production began, the team may still be looking for a new star to take her place.
With filming now officially underway on Wednesday season 3, the show will likely begin streaming in mid 2027. Previous seasons of the series took six months to complete production and subsequently began airing around eight months after wrapping, and should season 3 follow a similar schedule, that would see it finish sometime in September and be ready for a May 2027 premiere. Additionally, with the Fred Armisen-led Uncle Fester spinoff still in development, the creative team may be looking to build on its bigger cast to start setting it up.
